3 steps!

Yesterday, when I got home from work, Alex greeted me in the kitchen by taking his first steps!

Three to be exact.

I came in through the kitchen/garage door. Amy brought him into the kitchen, set him down standing up and he started taking his steps. We couldn't believe it. It seemed so surreal to me. For the first time, I've seen him walk without holding onto something (cruiser car or the couch). I'm sure we're in for a lot of nosedives and falls. I hope to capture his steps on video soon.

Cucumbers and zucchinis look alike

I bought a TON of produce at Meijer yesterday, including a steamer basket to steam some fresh veggies (which I had never done before--I'm slowly, but surely, getting domesticated! Plus I'm going to attempt a whole chicken in the crock pot this month--never done that before either...who knows maybe it will be a turkey soon enough?...we'll see :-) Anyway, I bought lots of veggies for salads (cucumber, celery, carrots), plus some veggies to steam (broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini--or so I thought!). The dumb signs in the produce section are not clearly marked. I had only ever bought a zucchini one other time for zucchini bread...anyway, I bought what appeared to be a zucchini (no sticker on it saying it was a zucchini)..was very long...wrapped on plastic wrap. I was excited about steaming it tonight, as a side dish to chicken./mushrooms with pasta. I looked up in the cookbook "how to steam zucchini/veggies" (remember, I'm new to this!). Start slicing up the zucchini and comment to Mike how it sure smells like a cucumber. Huh, and tastes like one, too. Duh, I bought yet another damn cucumber. I felt like such an idiot and was bummed that I didn't get zucchini for dinner and have more cucumber than I know what to do with. Must be organic or an English cucumber, who the heck knows? Anyway...I steamed some cucumber since I sliced it up...yuck, no thanks.

Alex finally does a baby sign!

We have been doing just a few basic signs (milk, more, book, ball) intermittently since Alex was 6 months old, or so. We are guilty of slacking lately with the signing since he is just not catching on! I swear a couple of weeks ago he did just a one-handed assimilation of the sign for "more" while eating, but then never did again. Today he definitely did the sign for "milk" when he was hungry for some (hand opening and closing like milking a cow). It was so cute! I'm thrilled :-) But then again, we were ecstatic the first time he waved to someone. He like waved for a weekend (a little over a month ago) and then we couldn't get him to do it anymore (although he did it at church this morning). This must be a good day for Alex as far as gesturing/body language goes...I hope he can keep it up!!

No business complaining

So, the gas prices are high(er) than we're used to right now and I found myself complaining about it the other day. Someone brought to my attention how lucky we are compared to others in this country right now. I have been watching more and more coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and realize I have NO business complaining at this time!! Sure it's an inconvenience and stretches our budget and I'll probably limit my driving, but so what? In the big scheme of things going on in this country right now, this is not worth feeling sorry for myself about. I watch the news and I don't understand why it has taken SO long to get, at the very least, food and water to these desperate people. The footage looks like it's taken from a 3rd world country...hello?! This is America!! Anyway, I thank God right now for everything I have that so many people are without...my home, family, health, car, possessions, clothes, food, water to drink and bathe...the list goes on.

Baby names database

SocialSecurity.gov has a searchable database of popular baby names. You can search and see the most popular names from as far back as 1880!

In the year I was born, 1975, Michael was #1. In 1977, Amy was 3rd. You can even search a name and see how it ranked over a span of years. Of course, Michael is a popular name. In the last 50 years it was #1 43 times and fell to the #2 spot 7 times. It's been overtaken by Jacob the last 6 years (1999-2004).

9-month doctor appointment

Alex had his 9-month doctor appointment last week (he was technically 9 1/2 months). He weighed 18 lbs., 5 oz. (I was hoping for at least 19 lbs.!) and measured at 30" long. He's growing nicely. He has 3 teeth now and is cutting his 4th. The doctor couldn't say enough good things about how perfect he is, haha! No, we really do need to get him eating more and more solid foods (but she says he's doing fine)...and get him to drink out of a sippy cup.

We've been trying to get Alex to wave for some time now and the other day at my mom's house several family members were waving at him and he just stuck his arm straight up in the air (as if he wanted to give a high five--takes after his mama)...but he did this quite a few times throughout our time there when others were waving at him (hasn't happened since we've been back home yet :-)

Crash

No, we did not get into a crash. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you! I am referring to the movie, "Crash." Mike and I went to Grand Rapids over the weekend (a little belated anniversary getaway). Maybe we will post pictures about it later (nothing too exciting!). Anyway, we watched the movie, "Crash." We had been wanting to see it since it came out. Here is a link to Roger Ebert's 4-star movie review and synopsis (this link discusses the movie much better than I could):

http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050505/REVIEWS/50502001/1023

And here is the official movie web site where you can view a trailer, etc. http://www.crashfilm.com

My typical idea of a good movie usually involves a romantic comedy/chick flick--guy trying to get the girl and some ups and downs along the way. "Crash" certainly does not fall into this movie category and I would not say that I "enjoyed" watching it, but it sure touched me. This movie was often rough to watch. It made me think and haunted me. It upset and angered me to see/hear some of the things people do/say to each other. I went through a lot of emotions while watching this (especially during a scene involving a little girl and her "cape" and a woman trapped under a car--have to watch it to see!). However, this movie was powerful and eye-opening...and in some ways, life-changing. It is about racism (involving many races, not only black and white). But most of all, it is about humanity. I think all people, being of the HUMAN race, need to watch this movie. Do we even see a hint of ourselves in any of the characters in the movie? If so, what does that say about us? We need to quit being ignorant jerks and refrain from stereotyping others. Treat others as individuals, as humans, and with kindness.

This movie is still playing at some theaters. It will not be released on DVD until Sept. 2005.

**I know our blog is not normally this deep, but I felt compelled to comment on this movie.

Goodbye Luigi's

Ugh, Amy read today in the South Bend Tribune that the pizza joint near our house, Luigi's on 12th street (Mishawaka), is closing and moving to Osceola. That's too bad. We've really enjoyed their pizza. They have another location near our old house, in River Park. That's where we go hooked on it.

One thing that was unique is their carryout and delivery pizzas come wrapped in a bag (on a round piece of cardboard)--not in a pizza box.

Osceola isn't that far from where we live but it would require crossing railroad tracks to get there. I really don't like cold carryout pizza.

Father's Day Weekend

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that today (June 21st) is our 2nd anniversary. Amy's cousin Liz offered to babysit Alex. We went out to dinner at Mazatlan (507 E. McKinley Mishawaka, IN), our favorite Mexican restaurant. [AMY ADDS: Mike failed to mention that I had a strawberry maragarita while at Mazatlan. I rarely drink, but when I do now, it does me in quick. Not to mention that the margaritas at this place are quite strong...and good! Let's just say I ended up giving Mike a "high five" at one point during dinner, which is not something I generally do and I have no recollection as to what was so exciting that elicited a "high five" response. I think it's kinda funny that I did that though.] Afterwards, we went to the Mishawaka River Walk. Since we're trying to save money, Amy came up with the idea of writing each other poems instead of buying gifts. I'm not a poet so all I can say is ALT.WWW.BUY-A-POEM-NOW.COM! (Just kidding).

I had a great first Father's day. We got up Sunday around 6:30 and Amy and Alex gave me some gifts. A Craftsman hedge timmer (our bushes are unwieldy), a t-shirt and a framed 8x10 picture of Amy and Alex.

At around 9am Amy's dad, and girlfriend Linda, came over for breakfast. Amy made a ton of french toast (she's good at it) and I made scrambled eggs and bacon. The key to good french toast as Amy has learned is to leave the bread out overnight. It will then harden up a bit and stay together in the batter.

Later that day we went to the hospital to visit my dad. Unfortunately he had to spend Father's Day weekend in the hospital. He's been on blood thinners so they think that caused him to have a severe nose bleed last Thursday. He lost a lot of blood and had to stay for observation. We were all worried about him but he started getting better by Saturday. We visited him Saturday and Sunday. He was so happy to see Alex. It really cheered him up. He was discharged today (Tuesday) and we'll visit him soon.

On Father's Day evening, Amy and I grilled some deer chops. And, for reasons unknown to me, Amy allowed me to make some deep fried onion rings!. There was only one condition: I had to do it outside (even the garage is forbidden now!). They were excellent. Here's my recipe:

Deep Fried Onion Rings
1 large sweet onion
1/2 cup of corn starch
1 cup of all purpose flour
1 cup of milk (or beer)
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon of salt (or more if you like)
1/2 teaspoon of black pepper (or more...)
1/2 teaspoon of garlic salt (optional)
A bunch of oil in a deep fryer!

Slice the onions into rings
Mix all the ingredients together and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Get the oil hot!
Dip the onions in the batter (completely covering) and toss them into the oil. BE CAREFUL!
Cook until golden or about 1 minute
Remove the rings and place on paper towels.
Enjoy!

On the move

Alex has started to crawl! Seemed like it happend overnight. He started out just pulling himself with his arms but soon he was moving on his hands and knees. We aren't chasing him around the house yet but he's getting better at crawling everyday.

Also, he can pull himself up to a sitting position.

In the mornings, when we hear he's awake, we look into to his room to see him in his crib sitting up and chewing on his blanket. A couple times, when we put him down for a nap, he'll sit up until he dozes off and falls forward asleep--with the blanket still in his mouth.

He's so funny. If I'm on the floor playing with him and Amy walks in (or vice versa) he looks at her, gets excited and starts crawling/lunging towards me as if he's trying to get away. He likes to be scared.

My skinny boy

Yesterday Alex had a "weight check" appointment. He is only 16 lbs, 6 oz (5th-10th percentile for weight), but is 27 3/4" long (75th percentile for length). No concerns really. He is gaining...slowly. And definitely getting taller. He's just a skinny little guy for now and that's okay :-)

Mother's Day Weekend

We had a beautiful Mother's Day weekend with our families. Alex and Mike made me a homemade card. Apparently Alex was stripped down to his diaper while Mike put paint on his hands and feet to make prints on the card. Turned out more like smudges, but so cute for my first Mom's Day! Read more...

Pictures from Alex's sixth month

Alex is on formula now and eats his baby food much better. One of his favorites is sweet potatoes! He loves to bounce, stand (assisted), throw balls, play peek-a-boo, dance, babble, and "fly" in the air. He enjoys the intro song of, "The Backyardigans" (a cartoon on Nickelodeon). We realize we've been picture-taking slackers this month. Here are a few pictures from his 6th month...
