On Alex's actual birthday, Monday, we rode the bus to Purdue and met up with Mike for lunch. I thought we would offer something a little different to Alex for his b-day lunch...cereal. A cereal bar, called Loops, is located in the market of the Student Union. They display several cereals along with all kinds of toppings (fruits, nuts, chocolate, marshmallows, etc.) and a variety of milks to top it off. I was ready to let Alex choose any kind of sweet cereal he wanted...he could even combine two as far as I was concerned since it was a special meal. What did my boy choose???

No, he was not pointing to the Froot Loops...that would be too normal and obvious for a child, haha. My kid wanted Raisin Bran!! Oddly, I was even suggesting (kind of pushing) other less healthy cereals on him, since this was a treat, but he was adamant about getting Raisin Bran. He eats it at Nonna's once in a while...I never buy it because I don't like raisins and didn't realize he loved it so much (so I may be purchasing some now). So, okay, I accepted the fact that he wanted Raisin Bran, but then I said, do you want some chocolate or butterscotch chips on it? No? Are you SURE? (What's WRONG with you?? haha). He just wanted good ol' fiber-filled Raisin Bran...good for him. So, while sitting around the cereal bar, he "indulged" in old people cereal while Mike and I had pizza.

So, I am talking about a very light subject today...but I would LOVE to hear from you, DELURK! If you read this blog regularly and never comment, please comment about cereal today :-) I think the most comments we've ever received with one post is 17? (the money-saving post), so I'd love to break that record. Make your voice heard (about cereal, anyway) lurkers! And, of course, I want to hear from our regular commenters as well.
Here are the questions: What was your favorite cereal as a kid? What is your favorite cereal now?
And, if you don't eat cereal and never did as a child, first of all, "Say what?" Secondly, Why not??
My FAVORITE cereal as a kid...and now...is Golden Grahams. I love it with a passion. I don't buy it much as an adult, but when I do, the box is empty fairly quickly. I would have gotten GG at the cereal bar with marshmallows and chocolate chips as toppings...S'Mores. My mom rarely bought us sweet cereals when we were young...GG was as sweet as she would go. I will say I mostly eat Cheerios (with fruit) or Fiber One Honey Clusters now as an adult. Once I turned 30 I have been all about the fiber. Hello, 13 grams of fiber/serving! You cannot beat that with a cereal that tastes so good. Just remember, as I have mentioned before, don't eat too much in one day :-) Consider yourself warned.
I can't wait to hear about everyone's favorite cereals!
I leave you with a random picture from Alex's Chick-Fil-A get-together for his b-day. Kids WAY hopped up on sugar (some bold red and blue icing on the cake, as you can see from their mouths!)

i love this topic! As a kid, I only remember eating those little boxes of cereal at my grandma's house. i would usually choose one that I would end up hating..like "Sugar Smaks" or "Frosted Mini Wheats"- UGGGGH! I hate those stinking little snow-covered hay stacks.
Now, as an adult...I absolutely LOVE a cereal that I didn't see anyone list.......
CRISPIX! This is a magnificent cereal. Here's the healthiest way: fill a bowl with crispix, sprinkle one packet of sweetner over the cereal and then pour ICE-cold milk on top, quickly shovel the slightly milk-soaked crispix into your mouth and chew quickly because you don't want them to get soggy-ooooohhhhhh! Then, when you have approx. 10 left....yes, that is 10 separate crispix...you begin to slurp the ever-so-delightful-slightly-sweetened-icecold milk until the last few cripix are left stranded in a dry bowl. Ahhhhh.....then the last few bites are heavenly. Okay, okay, i'll admitt that my obsession with food is a bit crazier than most realize :) Try Crispix! You'll love em!

I didn't get sugar cereal at home very often. So when I would go to grandma's and I got to eat sugar cereal I was in heaven. I use to mix the sugar cereals to get the best of both worlds. My favorite mix was cookie crisps (I think they were called...I didn't get them very often so I don't remember too well, but they were little chocolate chip cookies as cereal), mixed with reeses peanut butter cereal. Once again I'm not sure what that cereal was called. I also like fruity pebbles and could probably finish a box in one sitting.Antonette - Sun October 12, 2008, 4:28 pm
Favorites (then and now)Apples and Cinnamon Cream of Wheat
Raisin and Spice Oatmeal
Corn Pops
Cookie Crisp
Apple Jacks
Fruity Pebbles
And on Saturday mornings, I could be found in front of the tv, watching cartoons and eating...
a bologna sandwich with mayo and nacho cheese Doritos (ON the sandwich) on Wonder Bread.

My favorite cereal as a kid--you may remember, you may not--was Freakies (www.freakies.com ~ scary that they have an actual website for them). They were those weird globby little creatures that lived in a tree on the front of the box. They were the yummy best!My favorite cereal now is that old standby Captain Crunch Crunchberries. If I'm being slightly healthy, I side with Alex and go for the Raisin Bran, no extras please. I'm not a huge raisin fan either, but for some reason, those suckers in the bran taste really good!

My dad has worked for Post Cereals since I was in the 7th grade, and I interned there for 2 summers during college. It smelled so good on the days they made Honey Bunches of Oats, and Fruityand Cocoa Pebbles! I read an article about "Loops" and was a little disappointed that they have no Post Cereals there, but I'm sure I would love it. I'm with you, Amy and do not like raisins, but I will eat them in Great Grains Raisins, Dates and Pecans. I love Frosted Shredded Wheat and Honey Bunches of Oats.

My favorite as a kid was Fruit Loops even if they did rip up the roof of my mouth. But now that I'm lactose intollerant, I eat cereal dry and as a snack. And Honey Nut Clusters is my favorite. I can get it here in Germany but I've been on the south beach diet for months now and have cut out all 'sugary' snacks and chips and salsa. De-Lurking...wink.Amy M. - Fri October 10, 2008, 11:27 pm
love, love, love Lucky Charms. As a kid and now...Although from reading the other comments I will be trying Cocoa Beach very soon! I also was reminded of my former love of Honey Smacks (but back when they were called Sugar Smacks!) Mmmm...mmm...

I am a Trix, Captin Crunch, Frosted Flakes kinda girl. Really, I'll eat just about any kind except that bran stuff, sorry Alex. :) I just dont't like the grainy (haha) taste it has. Oh, and Sarah, I'm the same way about proofreading so long. Its awful isn't it. :) The boys and I are definitely going to try out the cereal place on campus! It was great seeing you guys today.Janice Focosi - Fri October 10, 2008, 6:25 pm
Hands down, Fruity Pepples. I love how the dye in this particular cereal makes you poop green for a week.Beth L. - Fri October 10, 2008, 5:00 pm
Look, you broke the record already!I was just telling Tony the other day that I used to love eating Cocoa Pebbles. It turned the milk all chocolatey by the time you got to the end. :) I need to get those as a treat again! Fruity Pebbles were yummy too.
These days I don't eat cereal too often. But I do like Honey Bunches of Oats. Also, Bob's Red Mill's "Mighty Tasty Gluten-Free Hot Cereal." It's a grainy mixture (comes in a bag) that you cook in water, and it soaks up the water and gets thick. Then you put a little milk over it(soy milk is good on it, too), and I add honey, Craisins and sliced almonds -- it is good, healthy, comforting breakfast food in the winter!

Wow look at those posts rise! I as a kid loved cookie crisp and honey nut cheeroies. I also regularly ate frosted flakes, trix and crispex. Now I mostly eat cheeroies or grapenuts, not because I love them but because of the lack of sugar, being diabetic I have to watch that. But occassionally my husband gets trix or captin crunch and I can't stay away from them.Mom - Fri October 10, 2008, 2:59 pm
Amy, not fair trying to beat your comment record by leaving half a dozen comments yourself!!!Michele Smith - Fri October 10, 2008, 2:30 pm
Captain Crunch as a kid. I like Honey Nut Cheerios now!Amy F. - Fri October 10, 2008, 12:42 pm
BY commenting.Maybe I should proofread my own comments, ya think?
Amy F. - Fri October 10, 2008, 12:40 pm
Sarah,I, for one, am thrilled that you (finally) commented...even if it is just about cereal :-) Raisin Bran Crunch, huh? I may have to check that out for Alex. You raisin freaks :-)
Thanks for making my day be commenting.
Sarah S. - Fri October 10, 2008, 12:28 pm
Because I love anything competitive I am also coming out of lurkerdom to comment. When I was a kid we usually had to eat Cheerios but my favorites were Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Lucky Charms when mom would let us have them. Now I am with Alex, actually, and I love Raisin Bran Crunch! This is why I don't comment...I just spent a good 2 minutes proofreading my comment to make sure I didn't type anything wrong or stupid!Jen - Fri October 10, 2008, 10:34 am
As a kid, I loved Rice Krispies. Now, my favorite cereal is Quaker Oat Squares. It is ridiculously expensive and hardly ever on sale so it is a treat if I buy it. I also loved that frosted mini-wheats with the vanilla creme center, but they stopped making it. Darn!Donielle @ Raising Peanuts - Fri October 10, 2008, 10:24 am
As a kid we always got cereal, and I loved lucky charms. Now, I don't serve it to my family very often but instead we eat oatmeal, eggs, or pancakes.Elaine - Fri October 10, 2008, 10:24 am
My husband considers "sugar" cereal a dessert. He could eat his weight in Fruit Loops.I on the other hand LOVED Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. SO YUMMY!!
These days I eat the frosted shredded wheat and Total with fresh berries. I can't eat that other stuff anymore... otherwise my thighs would be even wider! ; )

Oh I LOVE cereal. Right now my absolute favorite is Cocoa Beach by Kashi. It's a coconut infused chocolate granola, it is AMAZING. I don't have it very often because it's high in fat, but I've been known to have it for dinner. When I was a kid, I liked anything with sugar in it. Especially Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles.
Jamie U. - Fri October 10, 2008, 8:10 am
As a kid I never ate cereal or had cereal too much I really do not eat breakfast very much. As an adult I love the fruit cereals. Blueberry morning and Special K with strawberries. But lately I have been liking lucky charms and cereal is growing on me.Charlene - Fri October 10, 2008, 7:39 am
Cereal and Chick-fil-a!! That is what I would call a dream birthday. As a kid I liked Lucky Charms (or whatever the generic version was) and I still love it. As an adult I'm really crazy about Trader Joes granola cereals. They have a triple berry one that is amazing and they are cheap for granola - under three dollars!emily mcd - Fri October 10, 2008, 7:23 am
I was a child of a dentist, so I was NOT allowed to eat many fun cereals. As a result, I considered Cheerios to be fun, I guess. When we went on vacation, though, we would buy those little boxes of fun cereals to eat. I always chose Lucky Charms or Cookie Crisp. :) Oh, and SpeedLimit ate at the Ford Dining Hall the other day and said it was wonderful and so much fancier than Purdue in the 90's. We are even thinking of taking a "date" to the dining hall in a few weeks...seriously.Mom (aka Nonna) - Thu October 9, 2008, 10:13 pm
Mike, I love Honey Smacks too! They'll definitely be at Nonna's house next time you're here! And, Amy, I think you're wrong about sweet cereals as a kid - I bought some, but never, never Lucky Charms (with the marshmallows!)Kristy V - Thu October 9, 2008, 9:56 pm
As a child, I was all about Marshmallow Rice Krispies which they don't make anymore. Now, I really don't eat much cereal, but if I had to pick, Golden grahams, Pops, maybe Lucky Charms, and Crispex. I can't stand Fruity Pebbles and plain cornflakes are not my favorite either!Mari - Thu October 9, 2008, 9:01 pm
Call me a freak....I don't like cereal!! Every now and then I can handle a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. That's about as far as I go! I've tried on several occasions to get used to it and make myself "like" different cereals, but nope...it's not happening! Thanks for the challenge to come out of lurkerdom. It's been forever since I've made any comments on anyone's blog. I love reading your posts, though! Thanks for the entertainment.
Becky - Thu October 9, 2008, 6:06 pm
Sorry, but I really do not like cereal. I had it almost every day as a child and I really don't want it anymore. :) I did however, crave it when I was preggers!I really can't remember when I found your blog but it was at the time you lost Lydia. The pages you've created for her are really beautiful.
Enjoy your cereal morning cereal tomorrow!
mike - Thu October 9, 2008, 3:31 pm
@AmyActually, I started to write a sentence about how you don't let me buy any of them! But I deleted it. I love you too much to say anything negative about you. :-)
Amy F. - Thu October 9, 2008, 3:22 pm
Mike, dear, you failed to mention that I never let you get those cereals. I'm surprised you didn't stick it to me like others who say they love me, namely Lindsay, like to do...over and over again.Lindsay - Thu October 9, 2008, 2:58 pm
Oh, look! A picture of the kids having fun at a party I *WASN'T* invited to. Poor Ruby. When Alex proposes, I will have to remind her that her future monster-in-law held Alex's 4th birthday party at a restaurant that is as good as a death trap for her AND didn't invite us, either. As for cereal...
I love cereal. :) During Burke's pregnancy, I was really craving me some Lucky Charms. When I was a kid, my favorites rotated between: Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Puffs, and several others. During Ruby's pregnancy, I discovered a love of Frosted Mini-Wheats, and I really dig the strawberry flavored ones. :)
mike - Thu October 9, 2008, 2:53 pm
As a kid...Peanut Butter Captain Crunch (probably my favorite)
Lucky Charms
Fruity Pebbles
Apple Jacks
Corn Pops
Honey Smacks
Mini-Frosted Wheat
As an adult...
Peanut Butter Captain Crunch
Lucky Charms
Fruity Pebbles
Apple Jacks
Corn Pops
Honey Smacks
Mini-Frosted Wheat
I don't change...They're still my favorites. Also, my brothers and I laughed at kids on our street that wore bright yellow Cheerios t-shirts.
