Day 5 - Saturday June 28th, 2003

  • Slept in!

  • Watched "Spy Kids" on Showtime. Good movie.

  • Drove to downtown around noon. A little difficult finding a parking spot. Found a lot for $5.00 for 2-10 hours (in Gaslamp area).

  • Strolled through Gaslamp (5th, 6th avenues to Boradway). Lots of shops and many restaurants of all ethnicities and styles. Most have patios with outdoor dining.

  • Went to the main downtown area. Found the Downtown Visitors Bureau. Got some brochures, looked at huge scale model of downtown. Talked to a person about strolling and eating in Little Italy.

  • Attempted to go to McDonalds's next door to Visitors Bureau. Was extremely hot in there. Waited in line for a very long time. A customer was arguing with the cashier. Homeless people. We opted to leave.

  • Went to Horton Plaza (downtown outdoor mall) right next door. Had many eating places to pick from - went with McDonalds on top level. Much nicer than the other.

  • Ate our meals outside. A beautiful and sunny day of course. Walked through the mall. Went to a great game store (any board game you could imagine). Amy bought Tribond card and Spit! card games for her middle school kids.

  • San Diego City Store - bought an SD travel mug and x-mas ornament.

  • San Diego Kiosk - bought 3 t-shirts for $20.00. Great deal :-)(Although later discovered that when Mike tried on the SD shirt he had picked, it had an unusually high, distorted neck to it!--that's what you get when you go cheap!).

  • Decided to walk to Little Italy (India St. approx. 20 minute walk from Horton Plaza). Many of the shops were closed because of the weekend. Most restuarants were open. So we looked at menus on the streets.

  • Stopped at 2 different deli/markets to try to find anything that would keep and bring back to Indiana. Just bought some boxed pasta & waffle cookies. Also bought nougat candy for Mike's parents. Had fresh homemade pasta, but wasn't able to buy it. Wouldn't keep.

  • Thinking about dinner for the evening - decided on Zagarella's. Made a reservation for 6:45 on their front patio.

  • Made the trek back to Gaslamp to get car and go back to hotel. (it was a warm afternoon!)

  • Back to hotel to rest for a little while and then get somewhat dressed up for dinner. Mike woere shirt and tie.

  • Seated outside on patio at Zagarella's. A beautiful evening. Sun was still bright (and in Mike's eyes) at 6:45, but went down shortly. Ordered mozzarella sticks as appetizer. Mike spilled marinara sauce on the white table cloth right away! Amy did also.

  • Amy ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio wine. Amy's dinner = stuffed chicken breast with mushroom sauce and side of pasta (slightly disappointing). Mike - Bowtie pasta with shrimp/mushrooms/sun dried tomatoes (he liked it!). Waitress took our picture. Then, splurged on cheesecake for dessert (it was our special night out!). Amy - white chocolate raspberry. Mike - New York style (plain).

  • Mike took picture of "Little Italy" sign (lit up at night) following dinner.

  • Drove to Von's to get a few things.

  • Planning on drinking rum and cokes when we got back to room, but Amy fell asleep by 9:00! So tired - basically slept until 9am Sunday morning. Mike kept trying to wake Amy to get ready for bed. She kept falling asleep.
