Day 3 - Thursday June 26th, 2003
Left an hour later for zoo than we planned. Just dawdling around room. Mike had to go back to the room twice to look for map he left behind! Mailed postcards in lobby.
Drove through Balboa Park to the Zoo.
Bought admission tickets that included Skyfari (cable cars across the zoo), bus tour and express bus (that we never used).
Took Skyfari from east end to west end of park. Thought we would be able to see a lot of the zoo, but mainly just saw dead trees, etc.
Saw polar bears, but just sleeping. Monkeys, chimps, orangatangs, hippos, and lots of other animals.
Ate at Safari Kitchen (outside). Mike got a cheeseburger/fries. Amy, southwest chicken sandwich/fries (too much bun, not enough chicken). Got a souvenir cup with Coke. Mike's hamburger was good! Tasted like Burger King - of course Amy tried it.
Was a very hot and sunny day.
Went to the reptile house. :-( Saw all kinds of snakes/lizards.
Saw gorillas.
Waited in line for bus tour. Glad we did - got to see other animals we hadn't seen yet (giraffes, elephants, tigers, bears, koalas). Then went back and saw some up close afterwards.
Looked and looked for Pandas. Went up escalators, only to find the aviary (Birds. Boring). Finally found pandas- near where we started looking!
Got much of the day on videotape!
Pandas were active and cute. Had to be quiet for research reasons.
Back to see polar bears one more time.
Took Skyfari back to east, near Zoo entrance.
Browsed shops. Bought a panda magnet and shot glass. Looking for turtle for mom, but never found one.
Really wanted to get caricature done, but discovered it would be our faces on animals body. :-(
Saw people in neat costumes on stilts.
Left zoo in search of "Pizza Nova" in Hillcrest (more uptown). A little higher society area near downtown. (Supposed to be like SoHo in NY).
Found Pizza Nova in big building with all kinds of shops.
Parked in garage below it.
Felt a little underdressed in shorts/t-shirts at first, but then saw others wearing casual clothes.
Ordered artichoke dip with sourdough toast and "The Works" pizza. Wood fired pizza with pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions, and mushrooms.
Was very good- a couple of pieces left over.
Was very chilly by time left restaurant (7:15ish).
Drove back to hotel and stayed in for rest of night. Amy fell asleep very early! It was a great day!
Still no bugs!
