Day 1 - Tuesday June 24th, 2003

  • Woke up at 4:30am to get ready and get to airport for an early flight. (We went to bed at 1am the night before . Last minute packing).

  • At the South Bend airport we checked in at the United desk. Thought we had plenty of time to get a bagel and coke. (Mike: "Had to get a bagel, beagle?")

  • Then, waited in line forever to get through security- our flight departure time was nearing! Amy was stressed! As we were going through, we heard "last call" for our flight. Mike's lap top held us up some. We had to take off our shoes, etc. We were the LAST ones on the plane. Ran to get on! Very stressful!

  • Transferred to another flight at O'Hare (Chicago to San Diego). The plane made very loud noises. Overheard the flight attendant explain to passengers that the plane was made in France. What?? Amy was very excited that the flight had a movie. "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." It helped pass the time, while Mike read a newspaper. Had a breakfast sandwich (ham, egg, cheese panini). Flight was 3 hours 40 mins...Amy's ears were popping like crazy towards the end.

  • Confusion at baggage claim - were waiting at wrong claim twice (was mis-announced).

  • Caught shuttle to get to Hertz rental. Got a brand new red Ford Focus with only 2 miles on it.

  • Amy did the driving while Mike navigated (Amy is terrible at reading maps).

  • Drove to Cabrillo National Monument. Pretty drive. The weather was sunny & high 60's/low 70's. Took in scenic view at Cabrillo. Walked around lighthouse etc.

  • Drove around Point Loma (north of Cabrillo, west side of San Diego). Stopped and got a smoothie at place called "Chronic Smoothies." Mike = Mocha, Amy = Mango. We ended up switching because mango was too "tart" for Amy.

  • Drove through Ocean Beach and Loma Portal (north of Point Loma). Nicer Neighborhoods, beautiful flowers in yards. Finally started seeing some familiar stores and restaurants. (Walgreens, McDonalds, Arbys etc).

  • Checked into hotel shortly after 3:00 (San Diego time). Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina.

  • Rented a fridge for hotel room ($25/stay)...Local/Toll calls = $2.00/call!!!!! Very beautiful hotel, but very expensive. We are probably the poorest guests here. Bottles of water in room = $4.00/bottle (saw same bottles at grocery store for $.75/bottle). Parking is $14/day.

  • Took naps in room-very tired! Bed & pillows very comfortable. We have a great marina/pool view from balcony.

  • Got ready for dinner. Drove to Old Town (northwest of downtown). Much confusion on route. Turned around many times. Mike/Amy yelling at each other.

  • Finally got to Old Town. Authentic historic buildings, terra cotta, quiet, little shops/restaurants. Ate dinner at "Old Town Mexican Cafe." Mike = Chicken Chimichanga. Amy = beef taco (shredded) and tostada combo with frozen Margarita. Very good! Very full afterwards! Walked around a little. Got dark around 8:15.

  • Went to Vons grocery for breakfast foods and drinks.

  • Back to hotel-picked up many brochures of interest in lobby.

  • Unpacked and put everything in their place in hotel room. Feels like home!

  • Got ready for bed. Fell asleep while perusing brochures. Very tired. Slept great!

  • *** Have not seen any bugs yet!
